Michael Vick was supposed to be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, but according to The Christian Science Monitor, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback cancelled his scheduled interview, after initially agreeing to appear.
In a statement, Vick said: “After careful consideration, I will need to postpone the taping of the Oprah Winfrey interview scheduled for Feb. 22. I admire and respect Oprah and hope to be able to participate in an interview in the future.”
There were rumors that Michael Vick was ordered by his team ordered his upcoming appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show. However an official spokesman for the Philadelphia Eagles denied the rumors.
Chris Shigas, a spokesman for Vick informed MSN_FoxSports, that “The Eagles were supportive of Michael’s decision both when he agreed to do the show and when he decided to cancel.”
Harpo productions confirmed that Mr. Vick canceled his February 22, taping (for scheduled February 24 airing) for personal reasons.
Richard Hunter, a Dallas radio talk show host claims that he and the others who adopted dogs that were rescued from Vick’s ring were the catalysts for Mr. Vick’s decision to cancel the interview. Mr. Hunter says that he and others people who adopted the Vick’s pit bulls bombarded Harpo Productions with phone calls and email requesting participation in the show with Michael Vick.
“Unfortunately, Michael Vick has backed out of an opportunity to face tough questions regarding his participation in animal cruelty, including the torture of his own family pets,” the “Richard Hunter Show” host told usatoday.com. “There was an overwhelming call from the dog adopters and their advocates to Oprah to have our voices included in the episode, and that may have been more than Mr. Vick was willing to endure.”
Mr. Hunter would like to see the Vicktory dogs, as the rescued dogs are known, to be featured on Oprah’s show. On Monday, the dog owners started a petition on Facebook that reads, “THIS IS ABOUT THE VICKTORY DOGS AND OPRAH’S OVERSIGHT OF THEM. THIS EVENT HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT THE DOGS. OPRAH STILL CHOSE VICK OVER THE DOGS, SHE DID NOT CANCEL -HE DID.
THIS EVENT IS STILL ONGOING. PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE DOGS AND THEIR FAMILIES/RESCUERS.”
The page also includes an open letter to Winfrey, stating “it is reprehensible” for the host to devote a show to a man “who has yet to truly make amends for his actions.”
A rep for Harpo Productions sent an email to the Daily News informing that they spoke with the petition members and other animal cruelty groups. “We were still in planning stages for the show so can’t confirm if they would have been part of the final episode,” the rep said.
According to Mr. Hunter, The Oprah Winfrey Show should not be about Mr. Vick, but about the remarkable resilience and recovery of The Vicktory dogs. Mr. Hunter, in the video that follows shows that Mr. Vick, to this date, does not seem to show any remorse for his actions.
